AMD

Amd is the origin of the American semiconductor company based in Sunnyvale, California that develops processors for computers. The main products are microprocessors, cipset, motherboards and graphics cards, AMD also produces untu processor servers, workstations and personal computers.

AMD is the second largest supplier of microprocessors after Intel Corporation, and the largest supplier of graphics cards to three. AMD also has a 21% stake in the company which is a supplier Spansion flash memory. In 2007 AMD ranked eleventh in the value of earnings in perolehnya.

AMD was founded by a group of former executives from Fairchild Semiconductor companies are Jerry Sanders III, Ed Turney, John Carey, Sven Simonsen, Jack Gifford and three members from Gifford’s team is Frank Botte, Jim Giles, and Larry Strenger on May 1, 1969.

The first factory which is owned by AMD is in the city of Austin, Texas, USA. Both factories were Dresen, Germany is in dedicated to making Athlon processor types.

At the beginning pendirianya this company produces logic chips, and in 1975, then entered the RAM chip business. In the same year, AMD also introduced a reserve-engineered clone of the Intel 8080 microprocessor. During this period, AMD produces sereangkaian-bit processor elements are in use trending slince design mini computer.

One of the well-known processor ever created is Athlon processor. Athlon processor is a processor that is re-created without the use of the technology of its predecessor, the K6. Technically, AMD improve Floating Point Unit (FPU) in the processor significantly and includes 128 KB of L1 cache (64 + 64 KB). Does not stop at the L1 cache inclusion alone, at first Athlon processor has a subset of the external cache of 512 KB which is placed on the side of the main processor on the Slot-A models. But unfortunately, the Cache is not running at full speed. RAM memory is the high price cause the external cache processor can only run a maximum of up to 1/3 the speed of the processor core.

AMD is apparently not satisfied with the performance offered by the Athlon series processors. AMD were creating revisions to the processors and increase the performance significantly at each revision. Just over one year from the launch of the Athlon Slot-A, presenting the second generation of AMD Athlon processors named Thunderbird is now using the form format Pin Grid Array (PGA).

One of the changes that stand out from the second generation Athlon processors are a more compact shape and smaller than the Athlon Slot-A. Previously, Athlon Slot-A has a sizable form, such as a cassette with the larger trend and thick. With the change in format this shape, AMD cut nearly 80% of the size of the previous Athlon processor.

AMD announced a merger with ATI Technologies on July 24, 2006. AMD paid $ 4.3 billion in cash and 58 million shares of stock for a total of U.S. $ 5.4 billion. Merger completed on October 25, 2006 and is now part of AMD’s ATI.
